How is 5G different from existing wireless radiation?

5G is very different from existing wireless radiation. The Ministry of Health and telecommunication companies are denying this, but 5G is actually a different technology in several ways. Firstly, some of the frequencies involved in the 5G roll-out are much higher than existing frequencies used for 3G, 4G and wi-fi. These higher 5G frequencies are primarily absorbed by the skin and the eyes, whereas the energy of lower frequencies is dissipated over a wider area. That is not to say that these lower frequencies are harmless - indeed, there are many peer-reviewed, scientific studies providing evidence that they are not (link to Research page). However, the energy of the 5G frequencies being concentrated in the skin and eyes is a particular concern and there are virtually no scientific studies of any quality to inform us of the health effects. It should be noted that the skin is an important part of our immune system.

Can I trust the advice on the Ministry of Health, (MoH) website?

It appears that the Ministry of Health is keen to downplay any public concern about the safety of 5G and is not informing the New Zealand public that there is a lack of robust scientific research into the health effects of 5G. On the Ministry of Health website there is the following statement under a heading of 'What research has been done on the health effects of 5G?':

'5G is just another application of radio technology. There is nothing unique to 5G that would make it interact differently with the body than other radiofrequency fields (radio signals). For this reason, all the previous research on Radiofrequency (RF) fields and health also tells us about the effects and safe levels of 5G'.

SaferTechNZ considers this statement to make no sense whatsoever given that the higher 5G frequencies are absorbed by the skin and eyes rather than being more widely dissipated.

Who decides the levels of radiation we can safely be exposed to?

The Ministry of Health takes advice from a committee called 'The Interagency Committee for Health Effects of Non-Ionising Fields'. This committee has the incredibly important job of advising the Ministry of Health about the 'safety standards' needed to protect the New Zealand public from exposure to wireless radiation from cell towers and wireless devices such as mobile phones, iPads and laptop computers. Clearly, it's important that the New Zealand public can trust this committee to provide high-quality, independent advice. However, the Ministry of Health refused our requests for information about the membership of this committee and only revealed the identity of the members after a complaint was made to the Ombudsman's office. SaferTechNZ is concerned that there is heavy government and industry representation on this committee and very little specialist medical or biological expertise. There is also the issue of Conflict of Interest as a leading member of the committee owns a company having commercial contracts with major telecommunication companies.

What are the most hazardous sources of wireless radiation?

We receive the highest levels of wireless radiation exposure from sources close to us, as exposure levels decrease rapidly with distance from source. Therefore, it is clear that mobile phones held close to the head and carried close to the body are among the highest sources of radiation. Laptops and other wireless devices used in close proximity to our bodies, and earbuds, are other sources of high radiation levels. However, cell towers and wi-fi routers are also a concern because they expose us to continuous pulses of radiation, albeit from a greater distance.

Are children more vulnerable?

Children have thinner skulls than adults and their brains are rapidly developing, therefore they are more vulnerable to adverse health effects (note: can provide graphic showing radiation penetration into the skull for child v adult).

How can I protect myself & my family?

There are some simple ways to reduce your exposure to wireless radiation. Avoid holding a mobile phone close to your head when on a call – use the speaker function and keep the phone as far away from your body as possible. If you are carrying a phone in your pocket, make sure it’s on Flight Mode. Turn off wi-fi at night and whenever it’s not needed. Better still, have a technician hardwire your home so that you can use wired ethernet connections instead of wi-fi. Don’t use a wireless device such as a laptop computer on your lap – place it on a table away from your body.

If a Smart Meter has been attached to the outside of your home by one of the power companies, demand that it be replaced with an analog legacy meter. If they refuse, try contacting Nova Energy – they have been helpful in this respect. For further info about exposure from so-called Smart Meters, go to https://stopsmartmeters.com.au/

What are government agencies like the Commerce Commission and the Ministry of Health doing to protect us?

The primary responsibility for protecting the New Zealand public from adverse effects of wireless radiation rests with the Ministry of Health.  The Interagency Committee for Health Effects of Non-Ionising Fields provides advice to the Ministry of Health regarding scientific research and maximum exposure levels to which the public should be exposed. SaferTech NZ is concerned that a leading member of this Committee has a clear Conflict of Interest due to his company having contracts with major NZ telecommunications companies. Despite our complaints, the Ministry of Health is refusing to remove this member from the committee. SaferTech NZ has made a complaint about this to the Ombudsman’s office and the investigation is ongoing. Please see our ‘Actions’ page for further information and ways to support our actions.
