SaferTechNZ is involved in various actions to educate the community about the health effects of wireless radiation based on peer-reviewed, scientific research.

Our focus is on independent research rather than studies funded by the telecommunications industry. Community education actions include public information evenings, market stalls etc. Please contact us if you would like to get involved!

Other actions include lobbying MP’s and members of local Councils and Boards, as well as sending requests for information under the Official Information Act. Currently we are in the process of challenging the Ministry of Health’s decision not to remove a member of the Interagency Committee for Health Effects of Non-Ionising Fields even though a clear and acknowledged Conflict of Interest is involved.

The Precautionary Principle provides a basis for our actions.

The Precautionary Principle provides a basis for our actions. This principle is a decision-making tool that supports taking protective measures to prevent or reduce harm to human health or the environment from activities or policies that have a suspected risk, even if there is not complete scientific proof or consensus of the risk.

The principle emerged in the 1970s–80s in German environmental law and was later incorporated into international law and policy. The principle implies a social responsibility to act in the face of uncertainty and potential serious or irreversible damage. At an international level, the Precautionary Principle was first endorsed in 1982 in the context of the World Charter for Nature, which was adopted by the United Nations.

NZ Bill of Rights 1990, Article 10

How to submit an Official Information (OIA) request

It is really easy to request information from a government agency. Simply, go to http://www.fyi.org.nz and follow instructions and enter your question, keeping it brief and focused.

Lobbying MP’s and local Council and Board Members

Here is an example of a letter to an MP summarising concerns about the risks associated with exposure to wireless radiation - letter to Dr Ayesha Verrall.
